Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition – November 10, 2013
Following an extensive international talent search, NJPAC will host performances by the five finalists in this season’s second annual Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition and Sassy Award.

Founded in honor of Newark’s “divine” jazz icon, the winner of this exciting evening will win a $5,000 cash prize, plus the opportunity to launch a career.

Back in 1942, Newark teenager Sarah Vaughan was the winner of an amateur singing contest at the legendary Apollo Theater. That memorable night helped launch the lifework of one of the most successful, influential jazz vocalists in the history of America’s music. Now, NJPAC has made it possible for history to repeat itself. To honor Vaughan’s legacy, NJPAC holds a worldwide talent search that culminates with this exciting concert in the Victoria Theater, featuring performances by the finalists as well as rare concert footage of Vaughan.

With special guest judges Al Jarreau, Janis Siegel and Larry Rosen.
